El librito, concebido para la guitarra inglesa, contiene una somera introduction en teoría musical y 12 páginas de partituras: sencillas melodías populares inglesas y escocesas del siglo XVIII.
Fue publicado en Edimburgo, en 1758, por Robert Bremner, editor de música.

La guitarra inglesa es un instrumento de cuerda pulsada, de un tipo similar a la cista. Fue muy popular en muchas partes de Europa de 1750 a 1850.

Tiene una caja de resonancia con forma de pera, con base plana, con apertura circular y un cuello más corto de lo habitual.

Lleva diez cuerdas metálicas, las cuatro primeras dispuestas por pares que comparten afinación (empezando por la más fina y aguda) y las dos siguientes con cuerda única. Están afinadas de la siguiente manera: Do Mi Sol-Sol Sol-Sol mi-mi do-do (C E GG GG ee cc) o, como en este pequeño tratado: C E G CC EE GG.
